SYNOPSIS
Welcome to the Kingdom of Harmony! Both commoners and royalty alike are busy preparing for the yearly festival. But Prince Christopher is sulking because they are still at war with the Saxons, there is rumor of the plague, and he just doesn't have a lot of confidence in himself. The ladies in waiting and the knights try to cheer him up, but it's no use. (Me Who Am I.) The new captain of the guard, Captain Montague, arrives. He is an experienced soldier, looking forward to enjoying himself at the festival. (Rest and Recreation.) The prince and the captain meet the new recruits, including the strong and stupid Launcelot, the skittish Robin, and the often injured but always up beat Fred. (Not Yet Dead.) Meanwhile King Ulrich and Queen Twyla arrive to inspect the festival preparations. The King has chronic laryngitis, which has left him unable to speak. But Peregrine the Minstrel and Pantalone the Jester are always able to translate for him. (The Minstrel the Jester and I.) Prince Christopher is not sure they should still have the festival because of all the troubles in the kingdom, but they convince him that a little cheer is just what Harmony needs. The festival commences. (Topsy Turvey.) Two traveling dancers, sisters Genevieve and Winifred, entertain the crowd. The Prince is immediately captivated by Genevieve, and Captain Montague is equally smitten with Winnifred. (Rhythm of the Tambourine.) The Minstrel and Jester introduce the boys to girls. Meanwhile the queen is teasing the knights that the new captain might be even stronger than they are. (Then You May Take me to the Fair.) The Prince and Genevieve get to know each other and she tells him she believes she can make a potion for the King to cure his voice. The two are beginning to fall in love. (Ten Minutes Ago.) Winifred and Montague also get to know each other, and she tells him about the swampy homeland she left behind. (The Swamps of Home.) Genevieve and Christopher bring her potion to the king who drinks it, but Queen Twyla thinks she is trying to poison him and yells and Genevieve to get out of her sight. Genevieve runs off in tears and Christopher chases after her. The Queen laments that no one understands her and she is alone - in spite of her husband being two feet away, with Peregrine and Pantalone interpreting as always. (I’m All Alone.) The ladies in waiting, led by Petra and Lavinia complain about the two peasant girls stealing all the eligible men. (Stepsisters Lament.) Montague and Genevieve ponder over the sticky situation they seem to be in, and he asks her what the common people do to cheer themselves up. (What do the Simple Folk Do.) King Ulrich bursts in to find Queen Twyla. His voice having been repaired by the potion. He tells her he's been longing to get something off his chest ever since he lost his voice - how much he loves her. (Yesterday I Loved You.) The Queen realizes she was wrong about Genevieve and they all chase after her to apologize. Prince Christopher catches up with her first and tells her he would give up his crown if it meant they could be together. (If Ever I Would Leave You.) Everyone else runs in and the Queen apologizes to Genevieve. It looks like it's a happy ending after all - until they all remember that there is still a war, and a plague, etc. But the Minstrel and Jester tell them to be positive - the lovers have each other, the King got his voice back, and things are looking up. (Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.) THE END |
