The Storytellers Summary:
Our story takes place in a magical library where at night, after closing, the famous authors of the books contained within come to life. (Magic to Do from Pippin.) The librarian, Marian Quilby, tells the authors she is planning to retire. They beg her not to leave (Marian the Librarian from The Music Man.) She tells them that she wants one of them to become the librarian and live again. Mark Twain says he is the most qualified because he knows how to make life an adventure (Muddy Water from Big River.) Charles Dickens asks her to think of all the books he could write if he had a second chance (The Writing on the Wall from The Mystery of Edwin Drood.) Jane Austen says she is so tired of all these men talking, and the library needs to continue having a woman in charge (Show Me from My Fair Lady.) Poe says he isn’t really interested in living again, and frankly it’s bad enough that he comes back to life at night (Death is Just Around the Corner from The Addams Family.) Mary Shelly says that living again is exactly the sort of thing she is an expert on (Life Life from Young Frankenstein.) Each author agrees that if it can’t be themself, it should be the one who inspired them all - William Shakespeare (Will Power from Something Rotten.) Shakespeare declines the offer, saying he is simply too busy. The others agree that Agatha Christie should be eliminated since they all have mystery in their stories, so she turns out all the lights and frightens them with a bit of mystery (He Did It from Curtains.) Tolkien says that there is nothing he can’t do with his imagination (Who I’d Be from Shrek.) Marian cannot possibly choose between them. The authors suggest that perhaps they should just run the library in turns and that they’ll all work better together (Partner in Crime from Tuck Everlasting.) The authors realize they’ve never actually asked Marian very much about her life. She tells them that she’s had an incredible life being the steward of the enchanted library, but she’s ready to see the world that she’s read about in all their wonderful books (If You Knew My Story from Bright Star.) She gives one last look at her beloved authors before leaving the library as they wave goodbye.
